In May 2008, David became the runner-up on the seventh season of American Idol receiving 44 percent of over 97 million votes. Archuleta’s first single "Crush" was released in August 2008; his self-titled debut album was released on November 11, 2008.
His first single, "Crush," was released to radio on August 1, 2008, and was commercially released on August 12, 2008. On it’s first week it debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 166,000 units sold. According to Nielsen SoundScan, it has sold 1.04 million copies in the U.S. The track "Angels" was released as a digital download when the album became available for pre-ordering on iTunes on October 27, 2008. It has since then debuted at #89 on the Billboard Hot 100 even though it wasn’t sent to radio or officially released or promoted.
